Well, the northern Oregon PCT was so much fun, I've decided to go ahead and hike the southern portion as well, from Fish Lake to Big Lake, starting Sept. 8.  Highlights are Crater Lake, Mt. Thielsen, Diamond Peak, and Three Sisters.  This one is 244 miles, so I'm allowing 15.5 days—about 15.75 miles/day—a more relaxed pace than the 18.5 for northern Oregon.

I've tweaked my gearlist slightly:  added gaiters, got a lighter spoon, new rain mitts (the old ones I was using as improvised gaiters, each held together by a paper clip—that was good 'til I walked through a rushing glacier creek, and when I came out the other side, I had clean shoes, socks, & feet... but no more rain mitt gaiters!  Duh...), and a more durable ultralight towel.  Base weight now is 7 lbs 10.4 oz; total packweight with 4 days food & 16 oz. water is just under 15 lbs.  Here's my new gearlist.

...Oh, and, just for fun:  here's a previous blog about hiking the John Muir Trail in 2012.  Fun pictures for that!  :-)

Highly recommend this new, free-online movie about real PCT hikers, with beautiful photography:  Do More With Less:  A Conversation About the Pacific Crest Trail.  Enjoy!

Hi, friends!  For those of you asking about my gear, HERE is my gearlist.

If I had to recommend one thing for anyone planning a thru-hike, it'd be the book Ultralight Backpackin' Tips by Mike Clelland! (yep, he ends his last name with an exclamation point).  I'm pretty much following 93% of what Mike recommends.

The other great resource is Erik the Black's Backpacking Blog.

Happy to answer any other questions after I return on July 16!

Cheers,
